It takes about 20 sencods for me to load and 20 sencods to unload my bicycle from the front rack of an American bus.Is that the kind of additional time you're referring to as a possible reason to deny allowing cyclists on buses?When I was in Netherlands, I felt that I wouldn't want to take my bike on the bus because of the extremely short trips I imagined I would make if I lived there. So I support the denial of bikes on buses in areas where the majority of trips are short. In Copenhagen, bikes disallow buses. But taxis there can carry bicycles (required to have a bike rack). I would've appreciated a taxi like this in San Francisco when I got a flat tire and didn't know which bus to take back to the bike shop. As for bikes on trains, you should look into the Caltrain bike car. I had the pleasure of experiencing it twice this past week on my trip to San Francisco. They dedicate 1/4 of a double deck train car to bike storage, holding 40 or 48 bicycles (dependent on the car model). On some runs, there are two bike cars, so double the amount of bikes can be stored.
